Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Setup Guide

What You Need

  • A PC copy of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
  • A recent Archipelago install
  • lrff13.apworld
  • The matching LRRandomizer release archive
  • Nova Chrysalia Mod Manager 2.x
  • A file archiver such as 7-Zip

For version 0.4.0, the source setup notes are on the release page:

Important Notes

  • English text is required. Other text languages are not currently supported.
  • In Nova, always launch the game in Unpacked mode.
  • The Voice Over Setting in Nova must match the language you unpacked (EN or JP audio).
  • Do not use File > Reboot in-game. Close the game fully and relaunch it through Nova instead.
  • Items sent to you from Archipelago are collected by holding the sprint button while on the field (L2/R2 or LT/RT).

Install The APWorld And Generate A Seed

  1. Install lrff13.apworld through the Archipelago Launcher with Install APWorld.
  2. Open the Archipelago Launcher and choose Generate Template Options.
  3. Copy Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII.yaml into your Players folder.
  4. Edit the YAML and set your player name.
  5. Adjust any world options you want.
  6. Generate your game through your normal Archipelago workflow.
  7. If you are hosting locally, generate an AP_#####.zip file and host it normally.
  8. Once your room exists, download your player patch file with the .aplrff13 extension.

If you need the standard Archipelago hosting flow, see:

Set Up Nova Chrysalia

  1. Extract Nova Chrysalia to a folder of your choice.
  2. If you are upgrading from Nova 1.x to 2.x, uninstall your old Nova mods first and use a fresh Nova 2.x folder.
  3. Launch Nova for the first time.
  4. Under Global Installation, choose either:
    • Unpack Game Data (EN Audio), or
    • Unpack Game Data (JP Audio)
  5. If Nova cannot find the game data, launch Lightning Returns normally from Steam once and try again.

Build The LRRandomizer Modpack

  1. Extract the matching LRRandomizer archive to a folder of your choice.
  2. Run LRRando.exe.
  3. On the 1. Setup page, set the paths for:
    • your Lightning Returns install folder
    • your Nova Chrysalia folder
  4. On the same page, click Load from ZIP/APLRFF13 and choose your .aplrff13 patch file.
  5. Confirm the randomizer switches into Archipelago Mode.
  6. On the 2. Flags page, choose any additional settings you want.
  7. On the 3. Finish page, click Generate Modpack.
  8. Open Nova Chrysalia and install the generated .ncmp modpack from the LRRandomizer output.

Launch And Connect

  1. Launch the game from Nova Chrysalia in Unpacked mode.
  2. Make sure the Nova Voice Over Setting matches the unpacked language.
  3. Open the Archipelago Launcher.
  4. Start Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Client.
  5. Connect the client to your Archipelago room with the correct host, port, slot name, and password.

Troubleshooting

The Game Launches But Modded Content Does Not Appear

  1. Delete the unpacked game data in Nova.
  2. Unpack the game data again in Nova.
  3. Regenerate the LRRandomizer modpack.
  4. Uninstall and remove the old modpack in Nova.
  5. Reinstall the new modpack.
  6. Confirm you are launching in Unpacked mode with the matching EN or JP voice language.

The Client Says The Game Is Not Open

  • Make sure the game process is running before connecting.
  • If the game is already open and still is not detected, try running the client as administrator.

Save Safety

  • Do not load unrelated saves while connected to the client. Doing so can send unintended checks to the server.
